The cold front has definitely made an impression on South Africans this month. With our first snow fall in the Cape for the year, temperatures plummeted last week. Things seem to be a bit milder now and more bearable, but we’ve still got a whole month and a half of cold spells to contend with and it’s best to be prepared.
We share practical but stylish winter fashion trends this week, and give you new inspiration for how to pair your winter wardrobe staples to keep you looking hotter than ever.
Black has always and will always be every woman’s go-to. Regardless of season, we love the forgiving nature of black and the slimming silhouette it promises. With Winter layering, black can trim cms off your frame and give you a simple but effortless look.
That said there are some really feminine Winter hues that are giving us life this season.
Blush – The rosy, pale pink is a tad lighter than the salmon pinks from last year and can be teamed with grey and nude perfectly.
Camel – There is nothing more gorgeous than these soft camel tones. Invest in a long camel coat for a more structured item in this hue. It can be worn over jeans, dresses or formal wear so it transitions easily and you can make the most out of your investment.
Mint green – This colour is all the rage this season. It’s cool enough for the warmer months but should be stored away during the chilly days ahead. It’s a flirty, fun colour and can be worn a number of ways.
With so many options available for versatile, comfortable winter footwear, boots are no longer the preferred pick for many women. But the fashion obsessed diva within knows that every woman should own more than one pair.
The trend this season is synthetic boots instead of the typical suede and leather. Try to get a pair in the four standard colours to give you some room to play with different looks.
Vary styles and heels in grey, camel, black and tan. Dark chocolate brown is out this season and if you are a little more risque in demeanour go for something in maroon or dark red.
So you think you’ll have to pack away your printed skinnies or floral skirts for the warmer months? Think again. With fashion ever evolving you don’t need to. If you have a favourite pair of printed skinnies, whether floral or graphic, team it up with Winter friendly sweaters and shoes and you’ll own the season in fashionista flair.
Ever since Burberry etched their iconic tartan plaid within the lining of their trench coats in the 1920,s the print has been symbolic of high end fashion looks. Although there have been knock-offs lately, plaid or tartan is still a popular look. A plaid shirt needs to be included in every Afropolitan woman’s Winter wardrobe. The thicker fleeced shirts are perfect for those date nights when you’re going for a casual but chic look.
As always, fashion is what you make of it and these are just a few suggestions for you to try when you’re looking to switch things up a bit and try something new. Play with items of clothing that are a few years old, if it fits or looks distressed then all the better. The more aged an item of clothing looks these days the more vintage your look.
