In the latest episode of WHAT’S WRONG WITH GROOVIN? we explored the ancient kingdom of Mapungubwe, a place that continues to affirm our long history of Black ingenuity and excellence.
Situated on the borders of present day Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Botswana, the “Hill of the Jackal” points to one of the earliest, most enterprising Southern African Kingdoms with a thriving agricultural and metal-work industry — the golden rhinoceros, one of the most staggering discoveries of the ancient kingdom, is a manifestation of this.
The success of the kingdom was attributed to its geographical location, which allowed the people of this medieval city to create trade links between Southern Africa and the East as early as the 11th century AD, making it one of the most powerful kingdoms of that time. Discovered in 1932, the site’s excavation illuminated materials and artifacts brought to the continent from China, Persia, India and further out into the East.
When archeologists made the discovery, the excavation project was kept a secret from public eye, as the discovery of this powerful Black ancient civilization was in contradiction to systems and institutions built on the subjugation of Black people as an “inferior” race. The 6th episode of WWWG was a reminder of what Mapungubwe has to teach us about the triumph of Black civilizations before colonialism, as well as the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge systems.
