The weather is definitely on the way up. Although we’re experiencing the usual Highveld August winds, the temperatures are rising. If you did your best to stay out during the winter as we encouraged, we’re happy to report that it’s about to get much easier for you to leave the house and socialise! And when you’re ready, these are the best summer events in Gauteng. A few of the events will have a number of instalments in the coming months, which eliminates the unknown. If you go to a day party in September and have a great fun, why not got to the next one? This is the appeal of weekend lifestyle markets: everyone involved knows what to expect. When it comes to what to do in Johannesburg, we think these events are a winner.
Obrigado (1 September, 3 November, 15 December)
Wondering what t do in Johannesburg if you love music and a spending the afternoon chilling? Obrigado is the answer. Sound Supreme’s very own, Dj Kenzhero and Tha Muzik present a Latin music-inspired day party that is all about good music and even better company. Go to Obrigado to relax and sway along to the music while picturing yourself on your warm summer holiday.
Pop Up gym (1 September, 27 October, 24 November)
Pop Up Gym is a social fitness event for women that happens in and around Johannesburg. Run by Letshego Zulu and Khethiwe Mlangeni, the Pop Up Gym motto is “Train anywhere. Train anytime. No Excuses” and with their events, they put that ethos into action.
Savanna Comics Choice Awards (8 September)
Themed “The Rhythm of Funny”, the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards are back for an eight year. In July, the nominees were announced across 12 categories, with our very own Skhumba Hlophe scooping four nominations. The awards, which will be held at The Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City, are a perfect night out.
Delicious Festival (22 & 23 September)
When you are wondering what to do in Johannesburg in the spring, music has to be at the top of your list. Now in its fifth year, the DSTV Delicious International Food & Music Festival keeps getting better. With equal consideration put of the musical lineup as with the culinary offering, Delicious does two things exceptionally well.
The soil & Freshly Ground at Bassline Live (6 October)
Bassline Live will present two of South Africa’s favourite music groups this October. Soweto’s The Soil will meet Cape Town’s Freshlyground for an evening of soulful folk music. This will an evening filled with nostalgia as both groups will perform firm favourites from their respective catalogues while giving a taste of the future.
Justine Ithemba Walkathon (21 October)
We have been in partnership with the Justine Ithemba Walkathon for years and 2018 is no different. Meant to be a walk to honour survivors and remembers those lost to breast cancer, the walkathon brings together Afropolitans of all ages for a good cause. When considering what to do in Johannesburg for a good cause, the Justine Ithemba Walkathon is one such event.
Playing for Pink Polo (27 October)
October is breast cancer awareness month and in keeping with that theme, the Playing for Pink Polo is back. Enjoy a day at the polo while giving towards a good cause, as a portion of the funds raised go to an organisation that works in breast cancer awareness and with breast cancer survivors.
Soul Inspired (9 December)
The Soul Inspired concert, brought to you by Spar, has become an annual institution on the Gauteng events calendar. Before the Festive season kicks into full gear, Soul Inspired is an opportunity to get together with your favourite people and listen to uplifting music in a picnic, family-friendly setting.
