The KOF ’96 tournament was an overwhelming commercial success.
A few months after, the event triggered a fighting craze and various large corporations, offering to sponsor subsequent tournaments leading to a demand for an eagerly awaited KOF ’97.
King Of Fighter ’98
The game does not have a storyline.
It is developed as a “dream match” game featuring characters from all previous King of Fighters games, including killed-off characters.
The series’ canon storyline continues in The King of Fighters ’99.
King Of Fighter ’99
In this edition of king of fighters, some if the fighter teams are suspicious.
Heidern dispatches Ralf and Clark of the Ikari Warriors Team, to investigate the truth behind this tournament.
Upon their investigation, they notice that there are multiple version of Kyo Kusanagi scattered all over the world, leading to the assumption of him being cloned.
It turns out that a mysterious group called the NESTS Cartel has taken over the KOF, and has used Krizalid to download data from the selected team, to load into the biologically cloned versions of Kyo as weapons.
The NESTS Cartel’s plan is to deploy the sleeper cell clones all over the world in a unified attack.
