Joining The Hive with Bonolo BeeSting this week is The Soil member Buhlebendalo Mda
Shedding light on the challenges she’s facing as a woman in the entertainment industry, Buhle says it’s frustrating to be overlooked because she is female.
“The industry always puts men first. One of my biggest challenges in society and the industry is to be seen. You have to keep saying something in that way you get to make your mark,” she tells BeeSting.
The singer learned a harsh reality when started out in the music industry.
“I’m comfortable with my dirty all-stars and unwashed dreds. However, there are certain things you need to do in order to be recognised, like changing your look.”
Because of this, she started a clothing line catering to women like herself. “I started my clothing range for people who are like me who walk into a store and can’t find a size. I got tired of this.”
Buhle and her partner are couple goals on social media. She attributes their chemistry to their 12-year friendship.
“We are friends for 12 years and only started dating 3 years ago. We love people, our lives are very interesting and we want to share that. We want to express our creativity and found a space onTik Tok.”
Speaking about the rise in the emergence of traditional healers on social media, Buhle says to a degree, this is worrying for her. “It’s the miseducation that comes with social media.”
She acknowledges that “yes,” it is evolving but it’s important to respect the sacredness of our culture.
“I feel like as much as we want to educate., we should educate people on what we are about.”
She continues: “Concerning African spirituality, I feel like the way that we choose to do those things is bastardizing the culture.”
The musician poses the question: “What are you attracting and what are you doing it for?”
Buhle feels that “a lot of people saw a gap in the space of healing in our nation because we are in dire need of healing.”
