Panyaza Lesufi is looking to hire 6000 more people to fix potholes in Gauteng townships, in a bid to create more job opportunities.
The Gauteng Premier made the announcement on Sunday in Dobsonville where he introduced his new “green army”, the province’s litter clean-up crew.
Lesufi shared that 6000 families benefitted from having a member hired as part of the Greening Army.
“The Greening Army will conduct clean-ups of illegal dumping and litter picking in Township Informal Settlements (TISH areas).
This includes surrounding communities, main roads and open spaces.
We’re converting food parcels to job opportunities. Days of hand outs are over. It’s about sustainable development and growth. We can clean our townships, informal settlements and hostels by employing the unemployed. 6000 families employed today.”
Earlier this month, Lesufi introduced his R450 million new “crime busting unit,” the Crime Prevention Wardens in Gauteng.
While Lesufi believes this is a step in the right direction to clean-up the province from petty crimes and drugs, many criticized the Premier’s 3000 wardens for being unfit and ill-equipped.
The Premier’s ambitions however and costly plans are already in full swing, with Lesufi ready to hire the 6000 township pothole fixers by next week.
Lesufi told the community that the contracts will be in place for 6-months.
