Two men have been arrested in Alexandra after learners from Emfundisweni Primary School were hospitalised after purchasing “space cakes” for R1.00 from them.
DA Gauteng shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho said eight learners had to be admitted to Edenvale Hospital after eating the space cakes/cookies from the men who were vendors outside the school.
On Wednesday, Alexandra street patrollers apprehended the men, and a sample of the cakes were taken in for forensic testing.
As reported by Alex FM, learners who had consumed the products reported feeling dizzy and like their legs couldn’t move on Wednesday, 07 June.
Ramulifho said schools needed to adopt a strict vetting process for vendors at Gauteng schools, to ensure that learners are sold safe, hygienic and healthy food.
“It’s the responsibility of the school to vet all the vendors trading outside their school premises to protect learners from food poisoning and drug dealers.
The DA demands the Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, urgently establish a functional vetting system. This is in line with the DA’s call to review schools’ safety strategy in the province.
In addition, MEC Chiloane must initiate an urgent investigation into this incident.”
