The Diepkloof Crime Combating Unit and City Power carried out a cut-off operation of illegal connections in Soweto this morning.
In an effort to slow down the proceedings of the operation, residents barricaded the main road that leads into the settlement.
For some of the residents, the illegal connection is the only access they have to a power source.
Affected residents shared with Kaya News that they were forced to connect to the grid illegally because the government failed to provide the necessary infrastructure.
Residents say they are aware that their actions are illegal but the government still owes an explanation for why City Power is conducting a cut-off operation.
Unhappy residents fired shots at City Power technicians who fled from the scene.
