Pap is a staple in many households in South Africa. It is eaten almost on a daily basis in African families.
But not everyone enjoys making it. To make life easier, a young engineer by the name Rea Nkhumise invented the Automatic Pap-cooker called, ‘Lobola’.
Speaking to Sowetan, 29-year-old Nkhumise said he called it lobola because he thought it would make a perfect gift for newlyweds.
“I call it Lobola because I think it will one day be the perfect gift for a couple that is getting married,” he said.
The appliance makes the pap in 15 minutes and doesn’t need stirring.
How to use the automatic pap cooker:
– Take one cup of mealie meal and pour it into the cooker
– Pour 2 and a half cups of water and mix
– Close the cooker tightly
– Switch it on and allow to cook for 15 minutes
The pap will then be ready to be served.
Reaction from social media
The appliance has received a mixed reaction from social media users, with some calling it a great invention, while some said they still prefer cooking pap instead of making it in a machine.
Below is the reaction.
🤣😭 I'm buying the automatic pap cooker for future makoti duties. I'm happy someone understands that some of us can't do that hard labour stuff.

When we reject the Automatic Pap Cooker, it's because we know we can do what it cannot do: Exhibit A pic.twitter.com/laPOSaTka0
