The ANC has been left to lick its wounds following the recent local government elections. For the first time in our democratic history, the governing party has lost all three metros in Gauteng.
Meet the newly elected mayors in the province:
City of Johannesburg
The DA’s Mpho Phalatse made history by becoming the first female mayor in Johannesburg, beating the ANC’s Mpho Moerane. Phalatse won by 144 to Moerane, who received 121.
City Ekurhuleni
The DA’s Tania Campbell was elected executive mayor of Ekurhuleni after receiving 116 votes, while her rival and longstanding mayor, Mzwandsile Masina, got 105 votes.
City Tshwane
Mayor of Tshwane Randal Williams from the DA retained his position after being re-elected on Tuesday morning.
Mogale City
On Tuesday, the DA’s Tyrone Gray was elected executive mayor of Mogale City following a hard-fought battle. He received 45 votes while the ANC’s Lucky Sele got 31.
Emfuleni Local Municipality
The ANC’s Sipho Radebe was elected mayor of Emfuleni local municipality.
