Rand Water’s planned 54-hour shutdown from Monday morning will affect residents in eight municipalities across the Gauteng province.
From 5 am on Monday, the B11 pipeline will be shut. The B19 pipe will be added to the system, meaning that the supply to the city of Johannesburg, West Rand, Mogale City, Merafong, Rustenburg, Madibeng, Metsimaholo, and Emfuleni will be primarily affected.
Usually, municipalities that have managed their water supplies well should not be severely affected.
Today on the Morning Show with Thomas and Skhumba, the team asked the Kaya listeners to share how much clean water they think is wasted in their area daily.
“I don’t understand why we don’t have the site ready to supply water. We just voted last week, and you are telling us you don’t have ready water? On Monday, it was raining hard,” expressed Skhumba.
He also voiced his concern about the amount of clean water that car washes utilize daily.
Thomas added that he knows someone who lets water run in the shower for 15 minutes before they get in.
Calls and voice notes
“Guys, we have a toilet in Alex that runs 24-hours. If you speak to people to donate to fix the toilet, they’ll look at you like you crazy,” said a caller from the township of Alexandra.
“Right now, I’m looking at a burst pipe where I am at; municipalities clearly don’t care,” said another listener.
Selby from Orange Farm says that they can go for hours without water in their community.
“We have more than 54 hours without water. From 8 am we don’t have any water until six in the evening. We are used to this thing – from 8, we have to fill up the dust bins with water.”
