Channel O, which has been on the cutting edge of youth culture for many years, debuted a brand-new show named ‘Friday Freestyle’ this past Friday, February 11th. Stogie T recently joined Kgomotso Meso on Elite Nights to talk about his exciting new brainchild, the night of its premiere.
The idea came out of Stogie T’s desire to see people getting excited about hip hop as a genre again. Every Friday during lockdown, he observed rappers across the country who showed off their skills on social media. Each of the featured rappers would go head-to-head with punchy lyrics over a preselected beat while flexing their writing skills.

Stogie T says the idea was all about creating art during a time when the hip-hop community wasn’t able to meet in public, using the internet to connect with fellow MC’s and go back to the roots to of the genre.
“The anxiety of being under lockdown, and not knowing what to do with one’s self and just remembering what you are, like I rap. I was like, I am just gonna continue creating, I don’t know what’s going to come of this I am just going to continue creating. It resonated with other artists who wanted to join and be a part of it. I just grew to something I couldn’t have imaged.”

Stogie T added that the vision with the show was to have an up-and-coming artist on the same platform as an established artist and showcase their talent. Each episode features a line-up of guests demonstrating their ability to flow on the spot, while distilling their journey, reflecting on the scene, and just conversing candidly about interesting cultural topics.
