The Special Investigating Unit, SIU, is probing a scam by numerous state attorneys and law firms who defrauded the government. Speaking to David O’Sullivan Michael Masutha says they suspect state attorney’s received kickbacks for losing court cases.
The scams, which have cost taxpayers over R80bn, consists of either losing cases against the state and then proceeding to receive a portion of the payout or settling claims out of court.
The announcement comes after an expose in the Sunday Times revealed that state attorneys are deliberately bungling government court cases. The scam is estimated to have cost the taxpayer over R80 billion so far.

Its alleged the state attorneys are working with private lawyers to ensure that government has to fork out millions in botched cases. The state attorneys are suspected of then receiving kickbacks for ensuring that government loses its court battles.
Justice Minister Advocate Michael Masutha says the scam stretched several years back and investigations are yet to reveal exactly how much money was fraudulently paid.
