SuperSport United FC released a statement on Friday in which they confirmed that the club has parted way with its head coach Gavin Hunt (60) with immediate effect.
According to reports, Hunt was fired from Tshwane-based club due to a string of poor results which have left the club fighting against relegation.
In a statement posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday, SuperSport United announced Hunt’s departure from the club and thanked him for his contribution to South African football.
“SuperSport United FC and Head Coach Gavin Hunt have reached a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect. The board and management of the Club have expressed their appreciation to Hunt for the work he has done as Head Coach over many years.
“We remain convinced that Gavin still has much to contribute to South African and African football given his extensive knowledge and experience. We will always remain grateful for the impact he has had on the club and South African football,” SuperSport United said on X.
The club also announced that Andre Arendse will serve as the interim head coach alongside goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson as his assistant.
SABC Sport reports that former footballer Hunt has previously won three successive league titles with SuperSport from 2008 to 2010 before leaving for Bidvest Wits in 2017.
Hunt rejoined SuperSport in July 2022 and helped the club to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Meanwhile, Gavin Hunt’s daughter, Kaitlin Hunt, has shown solidarity with her father by taking to her X account where she expressed her sadness at the news and wrote, “Football is so cruel. My heart has never felt so heavy.”
