Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Ronwen Williams has received a nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or Yachine Trophy.
The prestigious French football awards released the full nomination list and Williams made the shortlist.
Not only is he the sole African nominee in this year’s rendition of the awards, but he also becomes the first goalkeeper in history to be nominated for the Yachine Trophy while playing for an African club.
Williams played a big part in Mamelodi Sundowns winning the inaugural African Football League (AFL) and the DStv Premiership in the 2024/24 campaign.
He made the headlines during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), especially for his great exploits against Cape Verde, making four penalty saves and helping Bafana Bafana to their first semi-final in almost 25 years.
The Downs shot-stopper becomes the fourth African goalkeeper to be nominated for the Yachine Trophy after Andre Onana, Edouard Mendy, and Yassine Bounou.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on Monday, the 28th of October 2024.
