PSL champions, Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the appointment of Miguel De Azevedo Cardoso as the new head coach of the club, effective immediately.
In a statement, the Pretoria-based side explained that the restructuring of the coaching technical team was necessitated by recent unsatisfactory results, despite the board’s commitment to giving Manqoba Mngqithi and his team an opportunity to guide the club into the future.
Mamelodi Sundowns expressed their gratitude to Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson for their years of loyal service and wished them success in their future endeavours.
“Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson will forever remain part of the Mamelodi Sundowns family. The club is also thankful to Romain Folz, who recently joined the team,” the statement read.
Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene will remain as part of the club’s restructured technical team, working alongside Coach Miguel and his newly appointed assistants, Fabio Fernandes, Pedro Azevedo, and João Araújo.
The Sundowns players will meet the newly appointed coaching team when they return to training on Wednesday.
Miguel Cardoso boasts an impressive résumé, having previously coached Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where he led the team to the finals of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League. He has also managed top clubs across Europe, including Porto, Braga, Deportivo La Coruña, Celta Vigo, AEK Athens, Nantes, and Shakhtar Donetsk.
Sundowns fans will be eager to see how the new technical team will shape the club’s performance in the coming fixtures.
