English Premier League side Manchester United has announced ambitious plans to construct a new 100,000-seater stadium, positioned as the centrepiece of a major regeneration project for the Old Trafford area.
Conceptual designs and scaled models of the proposed stadium and its surrounding district were revealed on Tuesday by Foster + Partners, the acclaimed architecture firm tasked with leading the project.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Co-Owner of Manchester United, stated that this marks the beginning of a new era:
“Today marks the beginning of an extraordinary journey to deliver what will become the world’s finest football stadium, anchoring a revitalised Old Trafford.
“Our current stadium has served us magnificently over the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the world’s elite sporting arenas. By constructing the new venue adjacent to the existing site, we can preserve the heritage of Old Trafford while creating a cutting-edge stadium that redefines the fan experience – mere steps from our historic home.”
He emphasised the project’s broader impact: “Equally vital is the stadium’s role as a catalyst for the social and economic renewal of Old Trafford. This project will generate jobs and sustained investment, not only during construction but long after the stadium district is complete.
“The Government has prioritised infrastructure development as a strategic focus, particularly in Northern England, and we are proud to advance this vision with a project of both local and national significance.”
