Hugo Broos has awarded his AFCON bronze medal to Jomo Sono.
Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana Bafana honoured South African football legend, and former national team captain Jomo Sono on Wednesday at Safa House by giving him an Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) bronze medal.
After defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo 6–5 on penalties, Bafana Bafana concluded their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) competition by taking third place at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium on Saturday night.
South Africa won the bronze medal for the first time since 2000 thanks to their victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
South Africa will be making inroads to qualify for the World Cup in the coming months, according to SAFA the national team is participating in the FIFA Series international friendlies pilot project in Algeria, which runs from 18 to 26 March 2024, and Broos will announce his squad for the event in the coming days.

Sono, a former player for the Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos, was paying South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan a courtesy call when Broos surprised him in honor of his previous Bafana contributions.

Sono was reportedly ecstatic and honored to receive the gift from Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Bross. speaking after the exchange, he expressed his gratitude.

“This is a massive gesture from Coach Hugo Broos and SAFA. What a surprise. This means so much to me and I will treasure this medal.”
