The South African government has commended Bafana Bafana for their outstanding and historic performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s 1-0 defeat to Canada on Sunday evening.
Although South Africa’s World Cup journey came to an end, Bafana Bafana made history by reaching the Round of 32 for the first time, exceeding the expectations of many football fans.
Government spokesperson William Baloyi said the nation remains proud of what the team has achieved on the global stage.
“The nation remains immensely proud of what the team has achieved. For the first time in South Africa’s history, Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, inspiring millions of South Africans and making the Southern African region proud,” said Baloyi.
He praised the players, coaching staff and technical team for their courage, resilience and commitment to representing the country with honour.
According to Baloyi, the team’s performances proved that South African football can compete confidently against the world’s best.
Government also thanked South Africans for the unwavering support they showed Bafana Bafana throughout the tournament.
“The overwhelming support shown by citizens across the country reflected the spirit of unity, patriotism and hope inspired by Bafana Bafana.
Although this marks the end of South Africa’s FIFA World Cup 2026 journey, Bafana Bafana has left an enduring legacy and laid a strong foundation for the future of South African football,” he added.
