The Independent Electoral Commission has welcomed the proclamation of the general election date for May, 8. President Cyril Ramaphosa promulgated the date yesterday. The first legal consequence of the proclamation is that the voters roll closed at midnight last night.
The election time table will now come into effect and is expected to be gazetted soon. The IEC says this also triggers the opening of candidate nomination for the elections. Registered parties have until 5pm on 13 March to submit their national, regional & provincial lists of nominations. Applications to vote abroad, and special vote requests for the 2019 National Elections are also officially open.
