Cameroon is one of the many African countries that have banned the smoking of shisha pipes, widely known as hubbly bubbly in South Africa.
The health sector in Cameroon believes it poses a health risk to young people.
According to the health ministry, 46% of young Cameroonians smoke hubbly bubbly which is usually a mix of tobacco, molasses, glycerine, and flavourings
In South Africa both teens and adults smoke hubbly.
Sammy T asks Kaya 959 listeners: “A number of African countries banned hubbly due to health risks. Should SA follow these countries and ban it as well?“
Zethu says it must be banned. “I think they must ban this thing. At the end of the day, it is going to damage their lungs.”
Another caller shares the same views. “This thing of hubbly must be cancelled. Even underage kids are smoking it. We had enough now.”
Maja from Parkrand believes there’s something hidden in hubbly. `’I mean if somebody tells you that it’s just flavour. You cannot just me that it’s flavour. It tells me that there is something underneath and most of the people that are smoking hubbly are into hard drugs,” she says.
What Kaya 959 listeners are saying on social media:
It must be banned in clubs. At home alone you can smoke it @KayaOnAir #ThomasAndSkhumba

I think it should be banned mainly because I see most teens not using it as something that's recreational but it's become a dependency. It's a gateway drug in my opinion . On the flip side they can put an age limit on it like alcohol.
