Are you washing your back correctly? That is what Sizwe Dhlomo wanted to know on Kaya Drive this Monday. The back is one of the hard-to-reach body parts that many people either wash incorrectly or not at all.
It proves to be such a mission to get clean that many opt to tackle that problem area just once a week, here’s looking at you Sandile van Heerden.
What happens if you don’t wash your back regularly is that sweat and dead skin can build up and clog your pores. This results in back acne and black heads forming, which can prove problematic to clear.
It’s not enough to just stand under the shower and allow the hot water to run down your back.
Expert advice on washing your back correctly
Because people may have skin conditions or sensitive skin, the first step to washing your back correctly is to choose a cleanser or body wash that suits your skin type.
According to a dermatologist, using a loofah or vaslap (wash cloth) is a matter of personal preference. Unless, washcloths and loofahs are hung up to dry completely between use, micro-organisms can grow on it, increasing chances to get a fungal infection.
This is why many dermatologists recommend just using your hands to clean your body.
The temperature of the water is another factor and many skin experts do not advise scorching bath water or showers as this can dry the skin.
Luke warm or temperate water is best to gently clean your skin.
Using an exfoliating body scrub is a good way to keep your back free from back acne or “bacne”.
Back brushes are also a good way to reach your back if you’re not flexible enough to get between your shoulders for a good scrub.
