Kasi ‘Superman’ DJ Stokie joins DJ Keyez on the Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30. The Soweto-born DJ is one of the pioneers of amapiano, making a breakthrough in the genre in 2000.
Growing up in extreme poverty, Setoki Mbatha, better known as DJ Stokie is determined to not end up with nothing and is pushing to secure his future.
The DJ has a documentary out, iPiano eSoweto: DJ Stokie Story, which focuses on his story from early childhood to how he established a name for himself in the SA music industry.
His 2020 album, My Journey, had a good run on Kaya 959, with Superman in particular being voted one of the top tracks on the charts last year.
DJ Stokie always knew that music was his calling in life, and he started of dabbling in deep house.
He started of taking township gigs for a mere R40 and thanks his lucky stars that he met Kabza Da Small.
While amapiano is believed to have started in the East Rand townships, DJ Stokie is said to be responsible for bringing the sound to Soweto.
It was Kabza Da Small who helped DJ Stokie hone in on his production skills and that’s how he started working on his own music.

DJ Stokie just completed building his dream home in his hometown. Just because he’s made it this far doesn’t mean that he’s forgotten where he came from.
The house will be used as student accommodation and will be used as his business venture.
He knows the music industry is not stable and always wanted to get into property because this way he’ll always have something to fall back on.
