A mother called in, In The Morning with Thomas and Skhumba to ask for assistance as she cannot afford to pay her daughter’s university fees. Her daughter’s bursary was cancelled after she failed a module.
“My daughter had a bursary at the beginning of her studies and she failed one module and the bursary canceled on her. At the beginning of 2021, we applied for NFSAS and at the beginning of this year, my daughter is financially excluded because the fees are not paid,” she explains.
She has tried contacting NFSAS on several occasions without success. “NFSAS is not giving us a straight answer. I’ve been e-mailing the finance department because no one is back at school.”
After finally getting through to NFSAS, she was told that she needs to pay 50 percent which she can’t afford.
“My daughter needs to register for this year and nothing has come through for us. Their response is that we need to pay 50% of what we are owing which I cannot afford,” she revealed.
A Kaya 959 caller advises her to go to campus every day.
“I used to work in the SRC back in the day when I was a student. The first thing is to try and go there every day. Print out all the e-mails that you’ve sent. Appeal and go give it to the SRC or student leadership on campus. They are the ones that’ll be able to assist you.”
