The story of Shaka Zulu is getting a modern adaptation with new short animation film Shaka iNkosi yaMakhosi.
Shaka iNkosi yaMakhosi, a short animation film set to first showcase at the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) from 23 July 2021 tells the story of Shaka Zulu,
The film is also voiced by some of South Africa’s renowned thespians including, Lilian Dube as Gogo MaLamula Zulu, Ayanda Borotho as Queen Nandi, Mondli Makhoba as Shaka, Dawn king as Mkabayi as well as Themba Ntuli as young Manzini.
Lilian Dube who plays (uGogo MaLamula), also once played the character of Queen Serabi in the Lion King, who was Simba’s mother and Ayanda Borotho who plays (Queen Nandi).
Borotho spoke with ENCA about how much of great honor it is to play the character of Queen Nandi.
“I think it’s an honor for me, anyone that knows me on social media knows how obsessed I am with Indlovukazi Queen Nandi. To see her being portrayed in this way, and to see her being portrayed in her son’s life as a big part of his rise to power which was a pivotal part of the rise of the Zulu nation is an absolute honor.”

The story follows a young boy, Manzini who is bullied by three boys on his way back from school in an incident that almost costs him his life.
He later confesses to his Gogo his desire to quit school who uses the opportunity to narrate a profound tale of resilience evoking the coming-of-age story of a great warrior and King, Shaka Zulu to inspire her grandson through the strength of his lineage.
Executive Producer and Co-Director of the film, Manzini Zungu speaks about the significance of this film in 2021.
