A North West mother is set to appear in court on Friday for allegedly killing her newborn baby.
The Hartbeesport Dam woman allegedly gave birth to the baby at her home in Sunway in Rietfontein on March 12.
She is accused of then placing the baby in boiling water before wrapping the child
“It is alleged that the suspect placed the newborn baby in boiling water, then wrapped the baby in plastic and buried the newborn in a shallow grave at a nearby field,” Lt Colonel Amanda Funani said in a statement.
Mother confides in a friend
Police say the mother allegedly told her friend about what she had done. The friend then reported her to the authorities.
“During initial investigations, police found the body of the baby, buried in a shallow grave,” Funani said.
The 29-year-old was arrested and charged with murder.
Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, has praised the woman’s friend for exposing her secret.
He also urged community members to continue cooperating with police “in order to ensure the protection of the most vulnerable in society.”
