A former police officer was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Rustenburg Regional Court.
The Hawks investigated allegations of unlawful transactions made by Stephan Ferreira who was attached to the police finance department in Rustenburg.
Ferreira resigned in 2015 following the “allegations of deceitfully using his fellow unsuspecting co-workers’ log-on credentials came to light.”
The investigation by the Hawks revealed that over a period of five years, Ferreira transferred funds to his personal bank account at least forty-seven times.
Ferreira defrauded the South African Police Service (SAPS) of just over R1.7 million.
The investigation was carried out by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime investigation team who then arrested Ferriera.
His first court appearance happened in January 2020 and he was convicted on 6 December 2021.
Ferreira’s sentencing happened on Thursday, 13 January, which was welcomed by the Acting National Head of the Hawks Lieutenant, General Tebello Mosikili.
“We shall continue to root out rogue elements from within our ranks without fear nor favour,” she said.
