Phumeza Mdabe, actress and TV presenter, is the host of Abandoned, a new show on Mzansi Magic that helps orphans abandoned as infants track down members of their family.
In a reality TV show that aims to help them find a sense of belonging, Mdabe, who previously hosted Our Perfect Wedding, will assist, those who have faced childhood abandonment search and reconnect with their families. Some of the stories in focus include those of children left on park benches, commuter stations and orphanages.

Abandoned Kids in South Africa
Child abandonment across the country is a huge problem. According to the National Adoption Coalition, an estimate of about 3,500 children are abandoned annually. The 13-part reality show which debuted this weeks also helps parents find the children they had previously given up.
“As part of our exciting list of brand-new shows in the new year, Mzansi Magic will bring you reality TV that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, one that invites viewers on a journey that will also help them find a place of solace through relatable content,” says Nomsa Philiso, the Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.
Before Phumeza sets off to find the parents who owe their children answers to questions they have had their whole lives, the show will also explore some of the issue that each person has been dealing with throughout their lives. In the final part of each show, Phumeza also tries to reunite the featured parents and children through a physical or virtual meeting, where each party is encouraged to find a sense of closure and way forward.
