DStv’s streaming policy limits sparks outrage from customers after the platform announced it will be clamping down on password sharing.
From 22 March, customers will be limited to one streaming device at a time. Content will still be downloadable on a second device.
The change will affect subscriptions across Africa, and will mean multiple streaming of live shows and sports will be impacted.
Currently DStv allows con-current streaming on two devices simultaneously.
The streaming policy limits does not impact the number of devices registered on an account.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to counteract password sharing and piracy, while continuing to bring you the best viewing experience, we will be introducing measures to limit concurrent streaming.”
Statement from DStv
Since the announcement, South African DStv subscription holders have taken to social media to share their outrage over the platform’s decision.
“Multichoice/DSTv showing how poorly they understand their market yet again!”
“Dstv announced that we will no longer be able to watch their dstv streaming platform in 5 devices with an overpriced subscription that costs R1000. This is daylight robbery. Netflix, Amazon etc are 5 times cheaper, have better content, & you can watch it in 5 devices.”
So Dstv, how is a home with 4 people who have different tastes and of different ages going to manage?

Let me guess, a 10 year old, a 16 year old and a wife must now watch the same as grandmother.

The responses above are reflective of what most DStv users feel about the new streaming policy limits.
Many feel there are cheaper options for streaming but where DStv monopolises the industry is on livestreaming of sports.
This may not be enough to retain disgruntled account holders who feel the sports channels alone are not incentive to retain their subscriptions.
There will be no change to the platform’s pricing structures.
