Police have arrested more than 900 people in a number of blitz operations as part of Operation O Kae Molao. The operations were carried out in Ga-Rankuwa, Akasia and in the Tshwane district.
Gauteng spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said 242 people were arrested in Tshwane. Police confiscated drugs, liquor, unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and a vehicle as the owner was charged for non-compliance.
“A number of traffic infringement fines were also issued which amounted to R94 400. The disruptive activities of the night included simultaneous multi-disciplinary roadblocks conducted at Molefe Makinta Road in Zone 15 and Doreen Road in Akasia.Police also set up vehicle check points and stop and searches,” Masondo said.
He said police in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, West Rand and Sedibeng Districts, together with other law enforcement agencies, arrested more than 670 suspects.
They were nabbed for a range of crimes including drunk driving, assault, dealing and possession of drugs, possession of stolen property and theft.
All the suspects that have been arrested will be appearing in the various Magistrates’ Courts soon.

Lieutenant General Mawela commended law enforcement officials on their continued commitment in supporting Operation O Kae Molao.
“Senior managers in the SAPS, Metro Police chiefs, directors in various government departments, stakeholders – your hard work has not gone unnoticed, I have no doubt that your efforts will have a positive and direct impact on the reduction of the rate of contact crime in our Province and that is encouraging and commendable,” he said.
In a separate incident, a man was arrested after his girlfriend’s body was found in Zitwana in Middleburg.
It is alleged that the couple had gone drinking at a local tavern. They allegedly got into a heated argument when they got home.
Police said passing neighbours noticed an open back door of the deceased’s house and discovered her half-naked lifeless body lying on the floor. She had injuries to her head.
“On further investigation, Middelburg detectives discovered the suspect still sleeping in bed with bloodstains on his clothing,” Captain Lariane Jonker said.
The 25-year-old male was arrested on charges of murder and is due to appear in court soon.
