A second mayor has been killed in a fatal head-on collision in less than one month. Naledi Local Municipality Mayor Neo Shalk was killed in a car crash on Sunday morning.
North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Sello Lehari said Shalk’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision.
“According to the police, the Mayor’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision on the N14 road just outside Vryburg. Both the Mayor and the unidentified driver of another vehicle were certified dead at the scene,” he said.
Lehari said in the many joint law enforcement operations that were held in Vryburg, Mayor Schalk was always there.
“He would actively participate, imploring road users to obey the rules of the road. I am saddened by his untimely death especially at the time we are preparing for local government elections”, said MEC Lehari. Lehari will be visiting Schalk’s family this coming week.
A case of culpable homicide has been registered with the Vryburg police.
