Night out for two: Review

Is the one percent tax increase halting your romantic nights out? I’ll be the first to admit that it has caused me to re-evaluate my spending habits and just want to put it out there, it sucks. But like everything else, South Africans don’t have much say in the matter and we’ve just got to grin, pinch our wallets a little more and bear it. Or do we?

I recently came across Montecasino’s night out for two special that runs until the 13 May 2018 and decided to give this a go. Dinner for two, drinks, parking and a movie all for under four hundred rands? Yes, please! The exceptional deal includes a two-course meal for two, at one of four sensational restuarants: Fireroom, La Rosa, Lima or The Meat Company. Your choice of two drinks each at Milk & Honey or the casino bar and a 2D movie of your choice. It is the perfect night out if you’re trying to keep the spark flickering but still stay within your means.

The value for money is something to note. Realistically, a fine dining experience is not something every South African can afford. But Montecasino is clearly all for you taking your love life to new heights.

With so many options we were spoilt for choice:

The Meat Company: Is an award winning steak restaurant that is internationally renowned for its mouth-watering steaks. Offering a food and wine experience of international standard, they offer seafood, chicken and vegetarian options. If its steak you want, this is where you’re most likely to find the best. The options for the night out for two includes a 200g saucy sirloin steak or the vegetarian platter.

La Rose Mexican Grille & Tequileria: Mexican cuisine was listed as world-heritage cuisine in 2010 and it is a firm favourite amongst South Africans. If it’s an authentic fine dining Mexican dinner for two you’re after and Mexico may not be an achievable option, then this is where you need to go. Every detail in this restaurant will have you convinced you’re in the heart of Mexico. You can choose between two platters on the night out deal including jalapeno croqueta, flautas, quesadillas and tacos.

Fireroom: Is an oriental fusion restaurant that literally sets your tastebuds on fire. They’re trademark dish is sushi that is served flaming, so if you’re looking to take your tastebuds to the edge of mindblowing book a table. Indulge in a signature dragon roll or veg thai curry on the night out deal.

My partner and I decided on Lima Lounge. A tapas bar influenced by the Latin American fusion culture. The menu is heavily inspired by Andean civilisations but adapted to appeal to local palates. Meals are designed to be shared and this is what I loved the most about Lima.

It’s deeply intimate and the ambience is electric; it’s a gorgeous restaurant that has a private and semi-private option, with a lounge for those who want to put their heels to good work and groove a bit. It’s an edgy, vibrant and perfect atmosphere to get the chemistry between you electrically charged.

There are two options at Lima on the night out for two deal: A meat Bento box or the vegetarian option. Portion sizes are incredibly deceptive and the tacos, nachos, veggie skewers and anticuchos were satisfying. The flavours were all subtle and worked well together. Oh and their margaritas are to die for! Thank me later.

Dessert was the highlight for us both. A trio of desserts, perfect for sharing and each equally delicious. My favourite had to be the Peruvian caramel art – delicate layers of shortbread biscuits, smothered in caramel sauce and topped with strawberries. I could eat those happily for the rest of my life and not give a second thought about the size of my expanding waistline.

We had more than enough time before our movie started and we headed off to Milk & Honey, an elegant yet-hip cocktail bar with a Parisian flair, for drinks after dinner. You have a choice of four drinks on the night out for two deal, two drinks each. I opted for the Tanqeuray 10 Gin & Tonic with grapefruit, my partner went for the non-alcoholic Virgin Prosperity. Both drinks were delicious. The ambience at Milk & Honey is the reason I will definitely be back. It’s a young, chilled spot. Laid-back with a live DJ who keeps the vibe fun.

The offer is really popular and I suggest that you make your booking well in advance for the restaurant of your choice and at Milk & Honey to avoid disappointment. We struggled to get a smoking table at Milk & Honey because we didn’t realise how popular the place is. But they are and you should do yourself a favour and book your night out for two now.

A late night movie rounded off the evening for us, we chose Tomb Raider, having missed the opening month, we were pleased to have caught it before it was off circuit. The cinemas at Montecasino are what every movie lover dreams off. I was so happy to see them take the cinematic experience seriously by displaying a zero tolerance for piracy message before the feature started. Something other cinema houses could do well to note.

I honestly cannot fault the Night Out for two special at Montecasino. I would love to try the other three restaurants listed on the deal but I have a feeling the buttons on my jeans will protest a little. You try it for me and let me know how you rate the overall experience. Think of me when you sip on your Gin & Tonic, mentally thanking me for the great Night Out you had.

Thank you Montecasino for keeping romance within budget.

To book your night out for two head to: Montecasino
