South Africa will be presenting its case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) today, accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. This is the first case at the ICJ relating to the Israeli / Palestinian war. Hamas claims more than 23,000 people have been killed since October 7th. Approximately 1,200 Israelis were killed when Gamas launched a land, sea, and air assault on Israel from the Gaza Strip.
South Africa will today argue that Israel’s offensive is tantamount to genocide and is asking the Palace of Justice in the Hague for an immediate injunction.
South Africa’s legal representation is led by former Professor of Law at Witwatersrand, John Dugard.
The rest of the team is made up of Adila Hassam, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, and international lawyer Max Du Plessis and lawyers Tshidiso Ramogale, Sarah Pudifin-Jones, and Lerato Zikalala, while Irish lawyers Blinne Ni Ghralaigh and British barrister Vaughan Lowe are providing external counsel. Retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke will join the ICJ bench of judges in the matter.
