Two suspected kidnappers were shot and killed by police during a rescue operation in Randfontein, Gauteng, following the abduction of a 60-year-old businessman.
Gauteng police traced the kidnapped man to a house in Randfontein, where a shootout ensued between officers and the suspects.
While two suspects were fatally wounded, three others were arrested at the scene.
The businessman, who is of Muslim faith, was kidnapped in May from Lenasia. His abductors had demanded a ransom of R15 million from his family.
According to police statistics, 144 ransom-related kidnappings were reported in Gauteng between January and March 2025 alone.
Over the past two years, the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has arrested more than 170 suspects linked to ransom kidnappings across Gauteng and other provinces.
In a similar high-profile case last month, a notorious Mozambican kidnapping kingpin was shot dead in Fourways during a police operation to rescue a kidnapped Pakistani businessman.
