Four people have sustained third-degree burns following an explosion that led to the collapse of a student residential building in Doornfontein, Johannesburg.
Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo confirmed that the group was rushed to the hospital shortly after the tragic incident.
The four victims were reportedly next to the building at the time. They include one student and three security guards.
The collapse was caused by an explosion after a transformer reportedly caught fire.
“The transformer-related matter has been handed over to City Power. Emergency people remain on scene conducting further investigations and assessments,” said Xolile Khumalo.
Emergency personnel are still at the scene as search and rescue efforts continue to ensure that no one is trapped inside the Themba student residential building.
No fatalities have been reported so far.
