The Guinness World Records’ oldest person, Tomiko Itooka, has died aged 116. She was the oldest person in the world.
The mayor of the Southern city revealed in a statement that Itooka, who had four children and five grandkids, passed away on 29 December 2024 at a nursing facility where she had lived since 2019.
“I offer my deepest condolences,”
“Ms. Itooka gave us great courage and hope throughout her long life. I would like to express my gratitude once again,” said the mayor, Ryosuke Takashima.
According to the Guinness World Records, when Maria Branyas Morera of Spain passed away in August 2024 at the age of 117, Itooka was officially recognized as the world’s oldest person.
“She had made a public appearance in May 2024, when she celebrated her 116th birthday and was paid a visit by the city’s mayor. And in September, she was visited by Guinness World Records to be presented with her official certificate. Although hard of hearing, she remained able to communicate clearly, according to her carers. Tomiko was born in Osaka on 23 May 1908 – during the reign of Emperor Meiji – as the middle child and eldest daughter of her family,” said Guinness World Records in a statement.”
