The personal data, such as ID numbers, of the candidates listed on the ANC lists are contained in the documents that are currently in the public domain.
“The preliminary indications are that the unauthorised disclosure has all the hallmarks of reports generated on the internal administrative systems of the electoral commission so we can almost exclude a breach of security or a breach of data from outside. We think the disclosure unauthorised was done by one of our stuff members.”
“The Commission has authorised an inquiry to try to trace the circumstances under which the list was disclosed and the identity of the person or persons who may be capable of the release of the list.
“We have also reported the unauthorised disclosure to the Information Regulator as required by the Protection of Personal Information Act because the list contains personal information of data subjects.”
Ramaphosa reacts to leaked list
Despite the ANC candidate list being leaked, African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is confident in the work of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
He also confirmed that someone from the IEC leaked the list o
“We have been in discussions with the IEC, and they have informed us that it was just a glitch, it is not representative of the IEC system, and we continue to have confidence in the IEC’s ability to deal with all matters of elections including the list. They have given us an it explanation and we are satisfied with it. The IEC is dealing with the list being released illegally. They will in their own processes find out who did it, how did it happen and why,”
