- Despite the relocation, the DCS confirmed that Bester will maintain full access to legal counsel and family communication ahead of his upcoming court proceedings.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed on Friday, 30 January 2026, that convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester has been transferred to the eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Facility.
Bester, who was previously held at the Kgosi Mampuru C Max facility, has now been relocated to the most secure prison in the country.
The move follows Bester’s notorious escape from the Mangaung private security prison in 2023, where he was serving a life sentence. His legal team reportedly discovered the transfer through a family friend who had been scheduled to visit him.
In an official statement, the DCS emphasised that such transfers are routine and informed by rigorous security risk assessments.
The department noted that these measures are essential for maintaining the stability of the correctional system and preventing further security breaches.
The DCS further assured the public that Bester will continue to receive care in accordance with legislative policies.
Officials confirmed that all logistical arrangements are in place to ensure his relocation does not disrupt his ongoing legal representation or scheduled court appearances.
