  • A 21-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death during a confrontation with a 53-year-old man in Refilwe, Cullinan, on Spring Day.
  • Police say the incident began after a group of young people splashed water on the older man, resulting in a fight during which the victim was allegedly stabbed.
  • The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrates Court.

A 21-year-old man has allegedly been stabbed to death following an altercation with a 53-year-old man who was reportedly splashed with water during Spring Day celebrations.

The incident happened in Refilwe, Cullinan, in the City of Tshwane, on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

Gauteng police have confirmed the arrest of the 53-year-old suspect.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a group of young people were celebrating Spring Day by splashing water on passing pedestrians and motorists.

“When the group tried to pour water on the arrested man, a fight broke out between the suspect and the group of young people.

During the altercation, the suspect allegedly stabbed one of the young men before he reportedly fled the scene,” she said.

However, the suspect was allegedly caught by members of the community, who then assaulted him.

Nevhuhulwi says the 21-year-old victim was declared dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

The 53-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrates Court on Thursday, 3 September 2026.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.

Has Spring Day turned deadly?

Splashing water on one another has become a common Spring Day tradition in parts of Gauteng, particularly in townships, and is generally viewed as harmless fun among young people.

However, videos circulating on social media have raised concerns about the increasingly reckless nature of the practice, with young people seen splashing water on adults, motorists and motorcyclists.

In some of the videos, elderly people are seen being drenched with water, with some reportedly having their clothing pulled down or falling off in the process.

The incidents have sparked debate over whether what was once considered innocent childhood fun is becoming increasingly dangerous and disrespectful.

    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.
