Flavio Hlabangwane, the 26-year old murder accused has been declared fit to stand trial. Hlabangwane was arrested in November 2021, after human body parts were found in his fridge.
Making the gruesome find, his girlfriend ran to the neighbours and police were called.
He was sent to Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital for an evaluation after he attempted suicide twice.
His first attempt was once the body parts were discovered, before he was arrested and the second time whilst in prison. In his second suicide attempt, Hlabangwane tried to overdose on medication he was given.
Hlabangwane is accused of the murder of his female cousin, who he reportedly was in a relationship with.
Whilst it is yet to be confirmed if the body parts belonged to his cousin, the family believe it is her.
DNA tests will still need to be conducted to confirm the identity of the woman who was murdered.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, DNA swabs from Hlabangwane’s relatives will still to be taken.
Meanwhile, his cousin’s family suspect it is their daughter who was murdered by Flavio Hlabangwane because they don’t have any news on her whereabouts.
Furious family members of the deceased, say it’s been months and they still can’t bury their loved one. They will have to wait a little longer as the case resumes and will hopefully have answers soon.
The case was postponed to 20 April for further investigation.
