Eskom has implemented Stage 2 loadshedding until 05h00 on Wednesday, 09 March.
In a statement issued on Monday, the power utility said further breakdowns at Medupi meant loadshedding had to resume.
The latest breakdown adds further capacity constraints to the multiple generating unit failures over the past 24-hours.
This meant a severe reduction in overall generating capacity.
Trips at Matla, Kendal, Matimba, Kusile, and Grootvlei power stations impacted Eskom’s ability to replenish emergency generation reserves.
In addition, a unit each at Arnot and Hendrina power stations were forced to shut down.
Eskom expects some units to return to service over the next 24-hours but appeals to South Africans to reduce their electricity usage.

Initially Eskom had planned intermittent loadshedding with a break on Tuesday from 05h00 to 21h00, thereafter loadshedding resumes from 21h00 on Tuesday until Wednesday.
However this changed late on Monday evening with the utility saying a continuous loadshedding schedule would be required to manage consumption.
Eskom also warned that loadshedding could occur without any prior warning should there be further breakdowns to generating units.
