Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has confirmed the arrest of 6 suspects in connection with the hijacking and murder of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.
The 24-year old PSL player was shot and killed at a petrol station in Honeydew on Wednesday, 03 April at approximately 20h30.
As reported, Fleurs was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI and was waiting to be attended to at the filling station on 14th Avenue when he was confronted by two armed men.
The suspects who were driving a white BMW 1 series pointed a firearm at Fleurs, forcing him out of his vehicle before shooting him once on the upper body.
One suspect drove off with Fleurs’ vehicle, whilst the accomplice followed in the BMW.
Fleurs was taken to the nearest medical facility but was certified dead on arrival.
A specialized team led by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni traced the 6 suspects to Slovoville, Soweto in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 April.
Fleurs’ vehicle was recovered on Monday, 08 April but had already been stripped.
Police believe the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng and the search for more suspects continues.
The 6 suspects are expected to appear at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Friday, 12 April.
A memorial service for the football player will take place on Thursday, 11 April at the FNB Stadium.
