A Randfontein family is having difficulty coming to terms with the death of their 12-year son after he took his own life.
The Grade 7 learner from Avanté Primary School took his life on Thursday, 06 October.
Details about how the learner ended his life has not been shared but Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the family on Friday, 14 October.
According to the Department, the boy was attending counselling sessions offered by the school after concern was raised over his well-being.
The child took his life a month after he started counselling.
In a statement, MEC Chiloane expressed his condolences to the family and school community.
“Our deepest sympathies to the family, and school community at large for their loss. As the Department, we are shattered by this incident. We call upon learners who may be experiencing personal difficulties to reach out to our support systems that are readily available at their schools.”
The 12-years suicide has once again highlighted the importance of prioritising mental health issues.
