- Gauteng has launched the digital Gauteng Public Transport Regulatory Information System (GPTRIS) to overhaul operating licence applications and remove red tape.
- The system introduces remote submissions, real-time application tracking, digital payments, and self-service portals to eliminate long queues.
- The rollout improves compliance and seamlessly integrates the e-hailing sector following its formal legal recognition under national legislation.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has officially unveiled the Gauteng Public Transport Regulatory Information System (GPTRIS), a digital platform engineered to modernise the province’s public transport operating licence framework.
Led by Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the system aims to dismantle longstanding administrative bottlenecks caused by antiquated IT infrastructure and heavy reliance on paper-based processes.
The platform introduces user-friendly self-service capabilities, allowing transport operators to lodge applications and monitor their progress in real time from any location.

Additionally, GPTRIS features an integrated digital payment gateway for secure transactions, streamlines internal workflows to accelerate turnaround times, and cleans up historical database records to enhance overall data accuracy and governance.
MEC Diale-Tlabela stated: “We are using technology to simplify the operating licence process, reduce unnecessary administrative delays and make services more accessible to operators.”
She further noted, “Our objective is to build a licensing system that is faster, more transparent and responsive, while ensuring that every application continues to be assessed against the applicable legislative and regulatory requirements.”
The platform is designed to enforce rigid compliance standards, supporting legislative goals such as the 60-day turnaround time for standard operating licence applications.
Furthermore, the launch serves as a vital milestone for the e-hailing sector, formalising its interface with provincial authorities following its legal classification as official public transport under the National Land Transport Amendment (NLTA) Act and Regulations.
Department officials stress that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to building a transparent, efficient, and accessible public transport environment across Gauteng.
