SAPS has confirmed that 20 more illegal miners resurface in Stilfontein. The group reappeared on Wednesday, reportedly working in the defunct, historic Buffelsfontein gold mine.
Hundreds of illegal miners have established themselves in the mine that Harmony Gold does not own, but the zama zamas have been traveling kilometers underground from the abandoned shaft 11 to reappear at one of the company’s shafts as an escape.
Fourteen illegal miners reappeared at a different shaft on Sunday night, and twenty more did the same earlier this week.
In the North West, 54 illegal miners were taken into custody just this week.
Police spokesperson for the North West, Sabata Mokgwabone: “Twenty illegal miners resurfaced today at Margaret Shaft. They consist of 10 Lesotho, six Zimbabwe and four Mozambique foreign nationals. They are still being processed.”
