A South African soldier on patrol near the Zimbabwean border in Limpopo province has died after being trampled by a herd of elephants.

Private X. Raynard, a member of the 10 Anti-Air Regiment of the South African Army, was found deceased late on Sunday afternoon, 27 July 2025, near the yellow gate of the Madimbo Operational Base.
He was deployed under Operation Corona, a mission focused on border security in the Madimbo area.
SANDF spokesperson, Rear Admiral (Junior Grade) Prince Tshabalala, confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating:
“Early indications suggest that he may have been fatally trampled by a herd of elephants while conducting routine patrols in the area.”
Private Raynard’s service weapon was recovered at the scene.
Authorities have launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Private Raynard’s death. Tshabalala added,
“The matter is currently under investigation by SANDF authorities in cooperation with environmental and wildlife officials to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. A formal board of inquiry has been initiated.”
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga, along with Chief of SANDF General Rudzani Maphwanywa and Acting Secretary of Defence Dr Thobeka Gamede, have extended their deepest condolences to Private Raynard’s family, friends, and colleagues.
“Private Raynard’s dedication and service to the Republic of South Africa will be remembered with honour,” Tshabalala stated, emphasising the soldier’s commitment.
