The South African Council of Churches is appealing to anyone who has information about the robbery that happened this past weekend at a church in the City of Johannesburg to come forward.
A gang of armed men entered the church while the pastor delivered a sermon and proceeded to rob the congregation.
The armed gang members robbed congregants of their wallets, phones, and other valuables.
Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana of the South African Council of Churches says no one was injured during the robbery. He says that the real issue is the trauma that the congregation is feeling. Counseling was arranged by the church for affected members.
The question raised by the South African Council of Churches is how churches can protect themselves and the congregation.
Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana believes that if law enforcement can apprehend one group it will prevent other groups from targeting churches.
“I think for me the most important appeal right now is to our communities because these thieves live in our communities. We know them,” Mpumlwana said.
