Professor Dire Tladi sworn in as a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Professor Dire Tladi is being sworn in as a judge of the International Court of Justice after being elected by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.
The International Court of Justice is the only international court that adjudicates general disputes between nations and gives advisory opinions on international legal issues. Also called the World Court, it is one of the six organs of the United Nations.
Tladi has held numerous positions both inside and outside of government. He was an international law professor at the University of Pretoria.
Before this, he was the legal advisor for the South African embassy in New York and special adviser to the minister of international relations and cooperation.
Tladi’s tenure as an ICJ member will last nine years.

Tladi is taking his oath of office at The Hague, alongside three other new World Court judges: Sarah Hull of the United States, Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo Verduzco of Mexico, and Bogdan-Lucian Aurescue of Romania.
