The family of beloved South African comedian and actor Ebenhaezer “Ebby” Dibakwane has released a statement regarding his passing.
Dibakwane, who died on Friday, 7 March 2025 at the age of 31, is suspected to have died by suicide, according to preliminary evidence.
In their statement, the Dibakwane family expressed their profound grief and gratitude for the support they have received.
“The past few days have been excruciating for us as we come to terms with this devastating loss,” they shared.
The family revealed that Dibakwane had been battling depression for several years, a struggle that contrasted sharply with his public persona as a source of joy and laughter.
“Poignantly, Ebby was well-known for his talent of making people laugh, yet he struggled with depression. While his passing is heartbreaking, we pray that this tragedy reminds us all of the importance of looking out for one another and prioritising mental health, including seeking professional help when needed,” the statement read.
They also encouraged anyone facing similar struggles to reach out to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) at 0800 567 567, a toll-free helpline.
Dibakwane’s manager, Tabitha Hoy, had earlier confirmed his death, describing him as a “celebrated comedian, actor, and writer” who brought joy to audiences across the country. “To know Ebenhaezer was to love him, and he’ll be sorely missed,” Hoy added.
The family announced that a celebration of his life will be held at The Bioscope in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 12 March.
His funeral service will take place on Friday, 14 March 2025, at Church Unlimited in Mbombela, Nelspruit, starting at 07:00.
