Mpumalanga police are investigating the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman, who was gunned down in full view of commuters in broad daylight.
The victim is said to be in her mid-30s, and had reportedly opened a case of assault against her boyfriend prior to her death.
Eyewitnesses say the suspect was driving a bakkie, and stopped in front of the pregnant woman who had just stepped out of a taxi.
Pulling out a firearm, the suspect fired a shot into her leg.
After the woman had fallen to the ground, she was shot a further two times in the head, before the suspect drove off.
The incident occurred in Samora Machel Street, near Buscor’s bus terminals.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the pregnant woman had been fatally shot, saying emergency medical personnel declared the woman dead on scene.
The woman’s mother said she had told her daughter to come back home because she was being abused, which angered her boyfriend as he had reportedly already paid lobola.
However, Colonel Mdhluli said he could not give further details as police were still gathering information and investigating.
No arrests have been made.
In August, 35-year old Busisiwe Ngubo, who was pregnant with triplets, was killed, allegedly by her cop boyfriend, just moments before she was to deliver her babies.
The heavily pregnant woman was brutally attacked and strangled to death as she was en-route to the hospital, allegedly by sergeant Mbuyiseni Gema, who wanted her to abort the babies.
Gema made an appearance at the Ixopo Magistrates Court on Thursday, 31 August, where his charges were read out.
The case was postponed for Gema’s bail application.
